James R. Wilkey Sr., Loving husband and father, passed away peacefully after a brief battle with cancer at his home in Santa Rosa on September 17, 2004, with his family by his side. Born in San Francisco on September 16, 1929, he attended elementary and high school in San Francisco until entering the Marine Corps where he served from 1946 until 1948. He moved to Santa Rosa in 1950 to attend Santa Rosa Junior College, and made Santa Rosa his home for 55 years. He began a long and successful career as an insurance broker in 1952. He worked for a Hugh Codding owned insurance agency until 1957 when he purchased the company from Mr. Codding. He was a partner in the firm of Carniglia, Wilkey, & Marocco and later of Wilkey & Marocco Insurance Agency for many years. He was appointed to the City of Santa Rosa Board of Public Utilities and served in that position for 13 years, 5 years as chairman.

He was appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to the North Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board in 1985 and served until 1992. He was appointed a member of the Sonoma County Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCO) where he served from 1985 until 1994. He was a past director of Codding Bank.

A strong believer in community service, he served as a board member of the Santa Rosa Boys and Girls Club for 24 years, 16 as president. He was a co-founder and charter member of the Cardinal Newman High School Board of Regents, and served as chairman for 3 years. He served as a 25 year member of the Santa Rosa Sports Celebrity Banquet Committee (the “Red Coats”), raising money for local charities. He was a 12 year member and past president of the Santa Rosa 20-30 luncheon club. He was the recipient of the 1963 Santa Rosa Junior Chamber “Young Man of the Year” Award. He also served over the years as director of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce, the Santa Rosa United Way, the Catholic Youth Organization (CYO), The Young Men’s Institute, and the Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Wilkey is survived by his wife of 24 years Jacqueline, by his son and daughter-in-law James and Donny Wilkey, his daughter and son-in-law Robin and Erich Rauber, his daughter and son-in-law Holly and Steven Spiegelman, his stepsons Chris and Dustin Siri and by his grandchildren Robin and Mitchell Wilkey, Max and Alex Rauber, Aubrey, David and Natalie Spiegelman, and Christopher Siri, and by his sister Helen Austin, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass to be celebrated on Monday, September 20, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Eugene’s Cathedral, 2323 Montgomery Dr., Santa Rosa.
