Dr. Richard Barbieri passed away on April 5th, 2018, at the age of 86.
Born in Santa Rosa to Louis and Lorraine Barbieri. “Rich” attended elementary school in Santa Rosa and graduated from Santa Rosa High in 1949 and SRJC in 1951. From there he spent four years in UC San Francisco Dental School earning his dental degree in 1955.
Upon graduation, he joined the US Air Force. He spent two enjoyable years at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio Texas practicing dentistry and achieving the rank of Captain.
In 1958, Rich returned to Santa Rosa and established what would be a thirty-year dental practice.
In 1954, he had married Mary Ann Stevens who had been his high school sweet heart. They were to have a 49-year marriage and three children, Rene (Brian) Welge, Rochelle (Scott) Vernon, both of San Diego and Marc (Kathy) Barbieri of Santa Rosa, all of whom achieved advanced college degrees. Rich was very outgoing, loved to talk, if you were a captive in his dental chair you may have gotten a lesson in Santa Rosa history.
He had a passion for sports, was an avid golfer, (being a member of Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club), loved tennis, and spent many winters skiing in the Donner Lake area where he had built a cabin in the 60s. He also loved traveling and did so extensively. He also loved the San Francisco Opera, and Santa Rosa Symphony. He continued his passions the lasted ten years with his domestic partner Jeanine Blackner.
Besides his three children, Richard leaves behind three grandchildren Sara Welge, and Caitlyn, and Noah Barbieri. As well as three siblings, Delores Longerbone of Sacramento, Allen Barbieri of Santa Rosa, and Beverly Linders of Santa Rosa and many nieces and nephews.
Needless to say, his enthusiasm and fun loving spirit will be missed by many friends and family.
