Don W. Coover Jr. of Santa Rosa, a longtime Sonoma County resident and owner of a Petaluma sign company, died In a Santa Rosa hospital Sunday after a short illness. He was 71.

A native of Cheyenne, Wyo., he had been In California since 1918 and Sonoma County since 1942. He was owner-secretary of Kresky Signs Inc. of Petaluma for 35 years. He was a member of the Santa Rosa chapter of Oddfellows, past president of the Active 20-30 Club of Santa Rosa #50, past director of the Santa Rosa YMCA, a member of the First Presbyterian Church, former board of Session member of Presbyterian Church, and board member of Kings Office Supply of Santa Rosa.

He is survived by his wife, Esther B. Coover of Santa Rosa, children Don W. Coover III, Candace E. Kynoch and Ardis M. Fitzgerald, all of Santa Rosa, and nine grandchildren.

Services will be 2:30 p.m. today at Eggen and Lance Mortuary. Burial is at Santa Rosa Memorial Park. Donations to the Santa Rosa YMCA, 1111 College Ave., Santa Rosa 95404, are requested.
