Passed away in Santa Rosa on January 7, 2013 with his family by his side at the age of 77 years. Dearly beloved husband of 50 years of Florine J.T. Ellingson. Loving father of Krysen Heathwood and her husband Matt of Larkspur, and Matt Ellingson of Reno. Adored grandfather of Madeline and Jack Heathwood. Dear brother of Susan Scott and Shirley McInaney, both of San Jose. A native of Los Angeles, Darryl is a graduate of Dorsey High School. Excelling in both Football and Track, he received All Southern California Football honors in 1952, was an outstanding track star in the 100 and 200 yard dash, and was Athlete of the Year representing his high school in 1953. Coming from humble beginnings, Darryl graduated from USC, a dream that has made him a Trojan for life. A Veteran of the U.S. Army, Darryl served during the Korean Conflict, an experience that he said gave him the discipline he needed in life and taught him how to cook breakfast. Moving to Santa Rosa in 1962, he owned Lucky Lager Distributing. He went into the insurance business with Al Trombetta to form Trombetta Ellingson Insurance, and later with Sam Jones to form Ellingson and Jones, marking a 45 year career. Loved by many, Darryl had several nicknames, such as Elmo, Dee, and Big D. He is a 49 year member of the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club, and a former member of the Active 20-30 Club. His many involvements included the Red Coats, CYO, coaching track and football at Cardinal Newman H.S., serving as a CIF Track official, and the Royal Order of Can Carriers. Darryl enjoyed golfing, deep sea fishing, and was a sports enthusiast extraordinaire. Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Darryl’s Life on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Eugene’s Cathedral, 2323 Montgomery Drive, Santa Rosa, with a reception to follow at the Santa Rosa Golf and Country Club.
